The Tillamook County Commission on Children & Families has three standing committees that oversee the business of the commission.
The role of the Tillamook County Commission on Children and Families Executive Board is to present and discuss Commission business in order to develop the agenda for the next Commission meeting and to carry out other administrative duties of the Commission. The Executive Board of the Tillamook County Commission on Children and Families meets regularly on the second Wednesday of each month from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m.
Executive Board Members for 2010:
Carolyn Ollikainen, Chair; Shary Mason, Past-Chair; Kathy Gervasi, Vice-Chair.
Mission Statement:
To oversee the process of allocation of funds received by the Commission in order to
ensure a process that is fair, legal and open and to ensure that programs and projects
that receive funds are consistent with the Mission, goals, priorities and policies of the
Commission. The Allocations Committee makes recommendations to the Commission for review,
comment, changes and final approval.
Tasks of the Committee
In addition, the commission supports one committee that works on local initiatives:
Mission Statement:
To engage the community in addressing the needs of our infants and
children (0-8) and their families through advocacy, education, community
planning and coordination of services and supports for early childhood care and
education.
Great Beginnings is a committee of the Tillamook County Commission on Children & Families. We make recommendations to the Commission about policies, funding and issues related to young children age 0-8 and their families. We also coordinate planning for early childhood care and education services and supports. Our monthly meetings provide a forum for sharing information between and among early childhood care and education providers. By linking early childhood providers together and sharing our knowledge and skills, we are able to successfully advocate on behalf of young children at the local, state and national level.
The Great Beginnings Committee also serves as guidance for the Parent Education Task Force established in October 2000. The Great Beginnings Committee meets regularly on the second Tuesday of each month from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Early Literacy
Great Beginnings members participated in the
Comprehensive Planning project which found that a significant number of
school-age children in Tillamook County are struggling to read at grade level.
In response, the Great Beginnings Committee has applied for and received over
$200,000 in the last three years to increase early literacy skills in our young
children.
