Tillamook County Sheriff's - 1854 to Present

The Tillamook County Sheriff's Office was born during a period of time in history when all of 21 voting citizens would cast their ballots to elect a new Sheriff. A time when our county's first Sheriff would find himself engaged in assisting the citizens seek out enough provisions to survive another coastal Winter. A time when our first Sheriff would be contributing to the planning, building, and launching of a new schooner to called the MORNING STAR of Tillamook. When the name Trask, Vaughn, Quick, Dougherty, and Champion were well known by everyone. Time tested by experience down through the years, many things have changed but the Sheriff's Office has been tempered with the knowledge that responsible law enforcement, for the sake of all people, is as important today as it was in 1854.

It has been said that it takes people with unique qualities to effectively deal with the complex situations that our citizens can bring to bear on one another. Through the years the Tillamook County Sheriff's Office has been fortunate to have the association of many of these same special people, both paid professionals and volunteers.

They have all been gifted with a common virtue in that they have been people who cared about the welfare of others.

Through their encouragement and examples, many of these special people became the inspiration for others to want to continue with the tradition of concern and caring for the welfare of the Tillamook County citizens.

Historically, the Sheriff's Office has functioned around a spirit of volunteers providing the extra help needed by the citizens in their communities. United States Supreme Court rulings in 1978 all but eliminated a County Sheriff's ability to use or direct volunteers unless they had been highly trained and could meet certification standards. Hopefully, these rulings will not completely take away our future generations ability to know the special feeling associated with public service.
